Marriage Counseling

Relationship problems figure significantly in approximately 40 percent of all cases treated at mental health clinics.  (Gurin, Veroff, and Feld, 1960; Veroff, Kulka, and Douvan, 1981).  Of all the stressful situations that people face in life, divorce and marital problems rank second and third, respectively – exceeded only by the trauma accompanying the death of a spouse or close relative (Holmes and Rahe, 1967).  Relationship problems dramatically elevate the risk for clinical depression (Weissman, 1987, O’Leary, Christian, and Mendell, 1994; Whisman and Bruce, 1998), and they are overwhelmingly cited as the most common reasons for attempted suicides.

Not only does the couple have issues, but the tendrils go out to other areas of their lives.  The U.S divorce rate currently hovers at around 50 percent and goes up expotentially with every unsuccessful marriage after the first divorce.   Periphereal concerns are:
