Marriage Counseling

Relationship problems figure significantly in approximately 40 percent of all cases treated at mental health clinics.  (Gurin, Veroff, and Feld, 1960; Veroff, Kulka, and Douvan, 1981).  Of all the stressful situations that people face in life, divorce and marital problems rank second and third, respectively – exceeded only by the trauma accompanying the death of a spouse or close relative (Holmes and Rahe, 1967).  Relationship problems dramatically elevate the risk for clinical depression (Weissman, 1987, O’Leary, Christian, and Mendell, 1994; Whisman and Bruce, 1998), and they are overwhelmingly cited as the most common reasons for attempted suicides.
